“An engine is just a complex air pump.” A good friend of mine uses this
simple analogy to describe internal combustion engines. Each component
of an engine can be very effectively described and understood from this
perspective.

“Winning is never easy... we are always very close to the limit.” Never were truer words spoken by Sébastien Loeb after crashing out on
the last day of Rally Italy, handing victory to his closest rival,
Marcus Grönholm.

Just what is going on with Chris Atkinson? Within days of his crashing out in Portugal, the Australian’s co-driver
Glenn Macneall quit for “business and personal reasons” with a third of
the season already run. Whether or not Portugal was the deciding factor
is unsaid, but it may have been an incident too far.

Rally Portugal has always courted controversy, and its return to the World Rally Championship for the first time since 2001 didn’t disappoint, with incidents before, during and after the rally to keep everyone enthralled.

It takes talent, skill and perseverance to be a champion. It takes the
single-minded drive to keep your foot to the floor when everyone else
pulls back. It also takes that uncanny sixth sense to find the absolute
limit to pull away from the rest of the field when rubber meets the
road.

Adding an extra 100 horses to an otherwise stock 2007 Legacy GT may not be very smart, but it sure is fun, as Subiesport publisher Ryan Douthit finds out.

First-time Subaru owner Nick DiBlasi had a problem. Back in early 2001,
the WRX had just hit the United States market and was truly the next
big thing. “I had always wondered what the craze was about Subarus,”
Nick explained. “It always seemed like it was a cult thing, but once I
bought it I understood why people loved them so much.”

This is my third column, and I think I will blare my own horn a bit. In
the past several months, it has dawned on me that I have the best job,
ever. Ok, I don’t get cash thrown at me by lusty porn stars with the
keys to brand new Ferraris dangling from their pasties, but I do get to
play with cars a bit.

Not so long ago I conducted a survey on a car Web site. It wasn’t a
scientific survey, more a casual inquiry. I asked, “What aspects of
your car irritate you the most?” Back came the replies: Cheap plastic
bits that fall off; blind spots; and carpet the quality of belly button
fluff.

Subaru enthusiasts, myself included, tend to have a visceral reaction to the word boost. For some, boost is about power-on counter-steering around a slippery bend. For others, boost is effortlessly climbing a grade while their turbo sings an angelic whine.
